Mallikarjun Kharge's letter on voting turnout figures irks ECI: 'Highly unpleasant.'

The Election Commission of India (ECI) expressed significant concern to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday in a strongly worded letter about his recent remarks challenging the voting process's integrity. The letter chastised Kharge for his attacks on the integrity of election procedures, which the poll body saw as possibly harmful to voter participation.

"The Commission fully supports the right to free expression and believes it is the rights of political parties and their leaders to interact and communicate with one another. However, the Commission is responsible for acting against events that have a direct influence on the performance of its primary mandate, which is to conduct elections until results are delivered," the ECI stated.

On Tuesday, Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to the leaders of the opposition INDIA group, challenging the reported irregularities in the Election Commission's voting statistics. Kharge asked the INDIA bloc leaders to speak out against such apparent anomalies, stating that "our only goal is to protect the culture of a vibrant democracy and the Constitution."

Several opposition parties have questioned the EC's tardiness in publishing polling statistics.
